ABSTRACT

Luffa sponges are natural products used as exfoliative beauty aids. As a result of screening a case of folliculitis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa contaminated loofah sponge, we assessed the role of loofah sponge to support the growth of a wide variety of bacterial species. Our data show increased growth of sterile loofah fragments for many gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas, and Klebsiella) and Gram-positive (Enterococcus and group B Streptococcus) species of human origin and the environment. In addition, new hydrated loofahs used the object to a change in the bacterial flora of scattered colonies of Bacillus spp. and Staphylococcus epidermidis, a flora predominant Gram-negative bacteria. The potential for growth promotion loofahs (exfoliative and others) can be further augmented by desquamated epithelial cells entrapped in the fibrous matrix loofah.
