Drug abuse and addiction happen when a person uses any form of drug for one purpose or another way than that for which it was intended. Addiction is more often associated with the use of illegal street drugs. However, substance abuse often occurs with over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs (Rx) drugs as well.

Illegal drugs such as cocaine, crack, heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana are often thought of drug abuse, other drugs such as alcohol, although legal, are also drugs that are frequently and severely mistreated. Illicit drugs and alcohol are no longer the majority of adolescent drug abused, prescription drugs and OTC drugs are becoming the great freedom of choice.

In addition to street drugs many people often abuse prescription drugs. After many teens use cough syrups cons as High economic and legal, but the dangers of high are often severely underestimated. Many people are found innocent, but uncontrollably addicted to antihistamines (OTC and Rx) for their sleepiness sleep inducing effects. The mistake common to prescription drugs is that they are safe, and that the overuse and abuse will not have serious consequences.

There are also those who abuse prescription drugs that are often designed to help people for medical conditions, medications such as OxyContin and Adderall. In this case, the addict does not really need the drug to its destination. Instead, the attacker chooses to use to get high. Many times attackers will go through great efforts to obtain these drugs, the use of theft and fraud, including stealing drugs from family or friends, writing orders counterfeit or stolen from retail pharmacies. All these measures have serious legal consequences for those involved.
