A study on migraine better treatment If your migraine is not to offer the advantage that you expected, a new study reveals an easy way to increase its effectiveness.
This latest study in the Journal of American Medical Association looked specifically at the group of drugs called triptans, and focused on the most famous, Imitrex.
It found patients could get more relief by adding a more Imitrex drug cons.
Four years ago, Amy Lapa-Stochel started having migraines more often than all other days. It uses several drugs, including Imitrex.
Amy says: "In the past, when I took the Imitrex only headache would just bounce, your headache went away for a bit, then come back."
Many patients like Amy do not receive adequate relief.
There are several possible reasons.
Dr. Larry Newman, director of the Headache Institute at Roosevelt Hospital Center, said: "Part of the reason may be the wrong dose, another reason they are on the right dose but the drug too late during the attack and another reason is that drugs are as good as they do not address all the features of migraine. "
Drugs called triptans are widely used and very effective when taken shortly after the start of headache or signs of migraine.
But now, the latest research by adding anti-inflammatory naproxen Imitrex, patients more relief than when using Imitrex alone.
Mr Newman said: "What we know with migraine is that it is a nerve disorder, it is a disorder of blood vessels, but there is also the inflammation associated with migraine and triptans work the blood vessel and they work on the nerve, but the drugs that we currently do not include inflammation. "
In the study, patients either received a single tablet containing both Imitrex and naproxen, 500 mg, or obtained as Imitrex or naproxen alone, or placebo with nothing inside.
The combined pill containing both drugs were best headache relief two hours relieveing senstiivty to sounds and bright light, and relief of nausea was better.
The combo pill is also better support the relief of pain during the period of twenty-four hours after the begninning of migraine.
"You get the initial relief of headache immediately sumatriptan and naproxen is then pushed forward in time so that the last twenty-four hours later, if we get the initial headache relief, and naproxen prevents lasting headache come back later, "says Dr. Newman.
Amy says: "Once I take, it went, when I take this combination, I do not see another headache may be for another week, which is good."
