Orphaned at the age of three and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter was adopted by a police officer in Miami named Harry Morgan who recognized Dexter sociopathic tendencies and taught him to channel his gruesome passion to amateurs kill sensations giving a constructive direction: killing people who deserve it. Most have slipped into the justice system, because of gaps and technical aspects of the law or were never apprehended.
To hide from view and erase his own crimes, Dexter works as a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. Although his desire to kill was flawless (otherwise overcome by a feeling of "emptiness") Dexter, through extensive instruction from Harry, able to simulate normal emotions and keep up his appearance as a socially responsible be human. Flashbacks throughout the series show how Harry, who died several years ago, charged Dexter on the art of appearing normal, and he follows Harry's instructions as a sacred "Code of Harry."
Under this code, most victims of Dexter to be murderers themselves, people who have killed several times, without remorse. Dexter must also have proof that criminals are definitely guilty before he takes action.
Despite not having a "real" feelings, Dexter dates a woman named Rita, appear normal. Rita is psychologically damaged by the rape and abuse by her past ex-husband (a violent criminal and drug addict) and is too distraught to want to be in an intimate relationship.
