Definition

 

nasal spray addiction (rhinitis medicamentosa) is the term used to describe the dependence of OTC nasal decongestants because they cause rebound congestion (congestion worse than before the nasal spray was used).

Causes

During the fight against nasal decongestant containing oxymetazoline, xylometazoline, etc. phenylepherine (news vacoconstrictors) temporarily reduce the size of the turbinates, open nasal passages and provide relief of nasal congestion, etc. However, when used for more 3 consecutive days they cause rebound congestion. Rebound congestion is the result of an abnormal hypertrophy (enlargement) and swelling of the nasal mucosa. This blocks the nasal passages causing nasal congestion and related symptoms. This congestion rebound is temporarily relieved by using the nasal spray crime. Thus, a vicious circle of dependence occurs.

The delicate lining of the nose may be damaged permanently.

Treatments

It is important to note that the nasal spray addiction is a consequence of using a nasal decongestant spray to relieve the symptoms of a previous state of the sinuses. Therefore, once the nasal spray addiction has been treated, there may still be necessary to treat the cause of the original condition as a sinus infection or allergies.
